Special Report by Steve Moses - Donut Man Fills the Hole!

Rob Evans the Donut Man

There was much excitement in the air, in the days leading up to Sunday 1st November. The children, all 40 of them, were part of the Donut Man’s ‘choir’,

and had been busy practising the five songs he had asked them to sing, both in Sunday meeting times and at home. Consequently, most parents and older siblings also knew the songs back to front before the Donut Man even set foot through the door!

The Donut Man, aka Rob Evans, and his wife Shelley, were on a tour of the UK, and Loughborough was their penultimate destination before their long trip back to the US. Matthew and Jennie Frost, long time friends of the Evans, were their host family.

The Family Service was kicked off by Helen Moses, and then the man himself appeared, replete in yellow dungarees and trademark hat! Rob has the ability to cater not just for the kids, but for the whole family, and he did just that, getting everyone laughing and singing, waving their arms in the air and doing all sorts of daft things! Of course, he got the children out to sing the five songs, which they did with cheerful abandon! Rob told me afterwards that if he had only done the five songs all the time, the children would have been more than happy!!

The ticketed concert in the afternoon drew a large number of families from both King’s and across the town. There were also families from around the surrounding area and some from much further afield. In between catchy songs, Rob told stories, many taken from the gospels about Jesus, with particular emphasis on the parables Jesus told. He also asked questions of the audience, rewarding good answers with doughnuts! At the end of the concert, it was ‘doughnuts all round’, as everyone had a small doughnut, to represent the bit that’s missing. And of course, we know it’s only Jesus that can fill the emptiness in every one of us.

On Monday, the children at William Street Primary School had an unexpected visitor – yes, the Donut Man took over the school for almost an hour, and had the children and staff thoroughly enjoying his unique story-telling style. Feedback afterwards was very positive, and it gave a lot more children the chance to hear the good news that Jesus offers us all.

So, thanks, Donut Man; and thanks, kids for learning the songs and the actions – you were wonderful! And also thanks to all the parents who gave their time and suffered for the sake of the gospel (actually, his songs are pretty good really!!). Who knows, maybe next year, we will get another children’s ministry to visit?

What I do know is Rob is a hard act to follow!!

Thanks for reading this, and I hope you like the pics!
